Our Treatment Philosophy Is Not For Everybody.
About Dr. Tim
My name is Dr. Tim Lloyd. I have been a chiropractor for over 20 years. How long I’ve been a chiropractor is not as interesting as why I’m a chiropractor.
A Former Stunt Driver
No, I wasn’t really a stunt driver. I was a 16-year-old that had a lot of “bad luck” with car accidents. I had 6 whiplash accidents before I turned 19 years old.
If that wasn’t enough I had two concussions playing football by the time I was 17years old. By the way, back then they just put you back in the game and told you to suck it up. Fun stuff!
That’s nothing!
The real problems started when I broke my neck in 1985 working at the big brown package company. I was only working there 6 days when an entire wall of boxes fell on me and one of them just happened to hit me on the side of the head. The weird thing to me at the time, was that I got hit in the head and my neck actually “broke” at the base. This phenomenon (something hitting in one location and causing a problem at a distant location) changed how I view the body. But more about that later.
I went to the hospital and I was lucky enough to have an excellent family doctor. Back then the hospital would contact your family doctor for “further instructions”. My doctor had a friend who happened to be an orthopedic surgeon. He wanted him to look at my x-ray before I was released. Good thing, because I had a compression fracture of the 5th cervical vertebrae. The orthopedic doctor was upset that the other doctors didn’t “see” the fracture.
The orthopedic surgeon told me that I was lucky I was a weight lifter because he thinks that I would’ve been paralyzed from the severity of the injury. Finally, a big neck and a thick skull payed off.
The broken vertebrae (neck bone) healed in 5-6 weeks. Bones heal fast. The problem wasn’t the broken bone. The problem was that I had constant, severe neck pain that caused migraine headaches. I had the whole list of symptoms: the one- sided headache, the nausea and vomiting, the photophobia (sensitivity to light), etc. In fact, I had such difficulty eating that I lost over 40 lbs. That might not sound like much weight nowadays, but I weighed 183lbs. at the time of the injury. So being 5’8” and 143 pounds isn’t exactly “healthy “for a 19-year-old weight lifter.
Of course, I went through the usual treatments after the injury. I took every pill under the sun. I went to physical therapy for over 12 months with no benefit. In fact, my neck was hardly moving much better after a year of physical therapy. I still had severe headaches, and I wasn’t cleared to go back to lifting weights again.
I was at wit’s end by the end of the year, so I fought to go to a chiropractor. I had been injured many times before and I had excellent results with previous chiropractic treatments.
I finally got an approval from Workmen’s compensation to go to a chiropractor. I knew a friend of a friend who was a chiropractor. I decided to give him a try. I wasn’t afraid about getting adjusted even though I had a “broken neck”. I was tired of feeling like crap and I wanted to get better. I knew getting adjusted would help me get back to exercising. I could tell that sitting around was causing my health to deteriorate more every day I couldn’t move. After getting adjusted the first day I knew I made the right decision. Initially, I felt a little worse, but I could move better right away. After a couple of weeks treatment, I was able to move well enough that I started going back to the gym. Within a couple of months, I had gained 20 lbs. back and was no longer experiencing constant headaches.
I consider myself very lucky to have had a broken neck because of what I learned from the experience.
Here’s what I learned a lot from having a broken neck at 19 years old:
· When your neck doesn’t move you can have all kinds of health problems.
· Movement makes a difference in every aspect of your health.
· Not being able to move is the quickest way to lose your health
· Pain is the result of not being able to move.
· Nothing is a cure all.
· You must move to get your health back! No doctor can move for you.
· Chiropractic helped me to move. Proper motion helped decrease my pain. Pain is the result of improper movement.
If you want to work with a doctor that truly understands what you’re going through give us a call.
We will do our best to help you get the results you’re looking for.
